Powerful play. The potential of professional development in musical play to support early years teachers’ music education

A true journey into the unknown In January 2015, I was admitted as an external candidate to the PhD programme by the Rectorium of VU University Amsterdam. My approved research proposal focused on the effects of cooperation between professional musicians and early years generalist teachers on young children’s musical play, and it aimed to answer the following research question: ‘How can cooperation between musicians and teachers most effectively support young children’s musical development through play’? Musical play is a form of music education in which children freely explore and create with sound and music, under limited guidance of a teacher.
