We are creating more data than ever before, all of which must be stored, transmitted, secured, and validated. This is a highly specialised field.
In this module, you will learn how to make data FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable), ensuring it becomes machine-readable rather than just human-readable. A cornerstone of FAIR data engineering is semantic web technology. You will learn how to give data meaning and teach a computer to reason logically, much like a human does. You will master the database language RDF (Resource Description Framework) for knowledge modelling and use SPARQL (the SQL equivalent for RDF) to execute queries. We further refine RDF data using ontologies, controlled vocabularies, and metadata. Finally, the FAIR Implementation Profile (FIP) and the FAIR Data Point (FDP) will be addressed.
Is this for you?
You hold an Associate Degree, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree. You work in a data-intensive field and face challenges regarding how to make your data FAIR. Basic computer literacy is required. Programming experience in Python and experience with SQL databases is an advantage but not a prerequisite.
Course Overview
The FAIR Data Engineering course is part of the Computer Science degree programme (2nd year). The module spans 10 weeks and carries a study load of 5 ECTS.
Classes take place on Thursdays between 15:30 and 17:30. Our curriculum is flexible and offered via a hybrid model: online video lessons are available and assignments can be completed at home. However, we do require physical attendance for the introductory lesson and the sessions focused on metadata.
We offer practical assignments and case studies, but it is also possible to carry out assignments using your own organisation's data.
Subjects
The following subjects are covered during the module:
- RDF (Resource Description Framework)
- SPARQL
- Web Ontology Language (OWL)
- Controlled Vocabularies (Thesauri, Taxonomies, and SKOS)
- Metadata
- Logical Inference & Knowledge Discovery (a branch of Artificial Intelligence)
- The FAIR Guidelines
Admission Requirements
- An Associate Degree, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree (in any field of study).
- Basic computer skills (Windows) and general proficiency in using technology.
- Experience with SQL or Python is a plus, but not required.
Upon Completion
Successful completion of the module earns you a micro-credential. Micro-credentials certify the learning outcomes of short courses and training modules, providing a flexible and targeted way to demonstrate the knowledge and skills developed for your personal and professional growth
