Research Group DataLab
In the DataLab, practice-oriented research is conducted on socially relevant data challenges. This research leads to real-world solutions for professional practice.
We offer students, researchers, and lecturers a modern learning environment while providing external organisations with a single, low-threshold point of access to data specialists who can support them with their data challenges. The DataLab is equipped with a robust data infrastructure and up-to-date expertise in modern data techniques.
Working method
More specifically, we focus on a research track centered around the safe and responsible deployment of human-centric AI, taking ethical, legal, and societal aspects into account. Furthermore, the DataLab works on setting up an ICT infrastructure designed to make research deliverables and outputs accessible to businesses and organisations (Open Science).
Education & knowledge sharing
- Community & Professional Training: The DataLab organises interactive knowledge sessions for students, lecturers, and community members. In collaboration with the Centre for Bioscience and Diagnostics (Centrum Bioscience en Diagnostiek - CBD), we design and deliver tailored training programmes and workshops specifically developed for laboratory professionals and industry partners.
- AI courses:
- AI for Beginners: Focuses on the practical application of generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT.
- Advanced AI Training: Designed for advanced users, with a specific focus on automated image recognition and computer vision applications.
Projects within the DataLab build upon one another; insights and experiences gained from previous projects are directly integrated into new initiatives and our educational programmes. This ensures that we do not have to reinvent the wheel every time.
Our projects
European Health Data Space (EHDS)
Partly driven by the rise of AI, cross-organisational data sharing has become increasingly vital. The DataLab investigates mechanisms for secure and compliant data sharing in the healthcare sector, focusing on the implementation of health data spaces and federated learning architectures.
AI4Intelligence
During this project, we investigate how AI-driven tools and methodologies can be deployed to process and analyse massive volumes of multimodal data for police departments and intelligence services.
Citizen Science
In collaboration with the Analytical Biosciences research group and other partners, the DataLab developed a dedicated mobile application to facilitate and streamline data collection by citizen scientists in the field.

We collaborate closely with regional companies and knowledge institutions, conducting applied research within University of Applied Sciences Leiden (Hogeschool Leiden) alongside our students and lecturers from the Leiden Centre for Applied Bioscience (LCAB).
