Peer van der Helm studied medicine and psychology. He achieved his PhD in 2011 with a thesis entitled ´First do no harm´ regarding the effects of the treatment climate in residential (forensic) (youth) care. For his doctoral research he developed the questionnaire GCI in collaboration with practitioners with which he could chart the treatment climate (living group climate) and could research the connection between aggression, treatment motivation and different treatment results such as the development of empathy. The thesis had a national and international impact.
