After years of working as a speech and language specialist and being a foster parent, in 2001 Miriam Erlings van Deurse MSc got (more) interested in the complex problems of (pre-verbal) traumatized children. Miriam choose not only to live with these children in a foster home, but also to conduct scientific research. At this moment, pre-verbal six traumatized children live in one of the foster homes of ‘Gezinskring’. ‘Gezinskring’ consists of foster parents and passionated professionals. Focus of ‘Gezinskring’ is taking care of children in a way that is best for the individual child’s interest in an environment as normal as possible. This requires flexibility, patient and engagement.
In collaboration with Hogeschool Leiden and University of Amsterdam, a research is conducted focusing on children placed in care. A small amount of these children has such an complex background, which acts out in persistent externalized behavourial problems, manifesting in all three main domains for children (home, school and leisure). Due to their behaviour, these children keep being transferred to other youth care facilities. What is necessaire to prevent these vulnerable children from frequent (and harmful) transfers?
At this moment, a longitudinal n=1 research focusses on a child with complicated behaviour which make it difficult to find the child a place to stay for longer time. After being placed in several secure residential youth care facilities, now the child is in a trajectory to a family-like foster home.
