Student Mido Al Shamali
Mido Al Shamali | Bachelor's degree obtained in June 2021
I had started training in medicine in Syria. When I came to the Netherlands, I also wanted to do something with it. That's how I ended up at Leiden University of Applied Sciences in 2016. Here I was able to improve my Dutch and refresh and expand my knowledge. I was offered courses that matched the course I wanted to follow, namely Biology and Medical Laboratory Research.

About the course

Hbo and hbo-plus

The TST prepares refugees for admission to higher education programmes in the Netherlands.

The TST also offers an hbo-plus programme which provides  extra classes in addition to the basic programme. Do you have an IDW (International Diploma Evaluation)  with high prior education in your country of origin? Is your English at least A2-B1? Do you have good results in the basic TST-programme? Then you can follow the hbo-plus programme. You choose the electives you need for admission to your (academic) programme. The completion of these electives is possible with an (external) exam, such as IELTS or a CCVX or Boswell – Beta exam.

What can you expect?
  • A weekly lesson program
  • Classes at one of two locations: The Hague or Leiden

In The Hague  at the University of Applied Sciences The Hague.
In Leiden at Leiden University or University of Applied Sciences Leiden

- Daily lessons from 09.00 to 16.00 hours, depending on your choice of course package
- Preparation for Dutch Staatsexamen II
- Intensive guidance by study career advisor
- An official diploma from the Language Foundation Programme (TST)

What subjects will you follow?

The TST has two course profiles:

  1. Society - Economy - Information Technology (MEI)
  2. Nature, Technology and Health (NTG)
  • In both profiles, you follow the basic subjects Dutch, English and Mathematics + optional subjects profiles
  • Dutch: study skills, presentation, group work, research, reflection
  • Personal development: working together with fellow students, with Dutch teachers and students
  • Required subjects for further education
  • Training for Decentralized Selection procedure.
  • Lessons in hbo-plus electives
Guidance on study choice or plan B

You discuss your study choice and your study experience in your country of origin. You will receive assignments such as writing a motivation letter, visiting an Open Day, a day of Study Experience. You will receive guidance with the admission process.
